How to Migrate a Website Without Losing SEO Rankings

A 2026 website migration playbook: URL inventory, 301s, content parity, Search Console, and the mistakes that turn a redesign into a ranking funeral.

How do you move a website without losing Google rankings?

Inventory every URL that earns, map one-hop 301s, keep content at parity, carry metadata and schema, and watch Search Console daily for two weeks. Migrations fail on vanity slug changes and homepage blanket redirects — not on “Google being mean.”

Pair this with redesign cost so the map is a line item, not a hope.

The sequence

What we refuse to do

Change every slug because the new theme “likes shorter URLs”

Launch without a redirect file in version control

Keep staging indexable “just for a minute”

Will rankings drop anyway?

A short dip is common. A collapse means the map or content parity failed. Plan the dip; do not accept the collapse.

HTTP to HTTPS?

Still a migration. 301 everything, update internals, resubmit sitemap.

New domain?

Harder. Use Search Console change of address, keep the old host redirecting for a long time, and do not 302.

How long should 301s stay?

Years, not weeks. Links and bookmarks do not expire when your campaign does.

What about parameters and trailing slashes?

Pick one canonical shape and redirect the rest. Mixed slash rules duplicate the whole site.
